This is a ‘LIVE COURSE’ – the instructor will be delivering lectures and coaching attendees
through the accompanying computer practicals via video link, so a good internet connection is
essential.

About This Course

R is a popular open-source programming language used by data scientists, statisticians,
social & health researchers, and many more across a wide range of disciplines. R is
particularly appealing to researchers as it is free to access, designed to encourage
collaborative and reproducible data analysis, and is constantly evolving to include the latest
research developments.
This course is designed to equip PhD students, academics, and professional researchers
across various disciplines with the essential skills to leverage the power of R and Tidyverse
for their academic research. The workshop begins with a gentle introduction to the user-
friendly RStudio interface and the basics of the R coding language, or syntax. This makes it
ideal for anyone with little or no prior coding experience, or those looking for a refresher of
the basics.
Attendees will learn how to manipulate, transform, and clean data efficiently, and how to
create compelling visualisations to communicate their findings effectively. Throughout the
course, we will discuss best practices for reproducible coding. The workshop is designed to
be highly interactive with a focus on practical applications, ensuring that you can
immediately apply what you learn to your research.

By the end of the course, participants will:
● Understand the RStudio interface and be confident using R syntax
● Be able to load, tidy, and manipulate their data using Tidyverse packages
● Generate clear summary tables that can be customised and exported
● Create compelling, informative data visualisations using ggplot2, and understand
what makes a good visualisation
● Understand what is meant by reproducible coding, and ensure their scripts are clear,
tidy and reproducible.

Intended Audiences

Anyone that is interested in learning more about R coding and how it can contribute to
making their research more efficient, collaborative and reproducible. This workshop is ideal
for anyone with little or no prior experience with R coding, or those that have not used the
programme for a while and would like a refresher. Although participants with prior
experience of other coding languages, such as Python and Julia, are welcome to join, they
may find the beginning of the course a little slow.

Teaching Format

The majority of the course is taught as a computer-based workshop: the instructor shares
their screen and explains code while participants follow along. This is interspersed with
hands-on practicals, allowing participants to practice their coding.

Assumed quantitative knowledge

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Assumed computer background

No assumed computer background. This course is ideal for anyone with little or no prior
experience with R coding, or those that have not used the programme for a while and would
like a refresher.

Equipment and software requirements

Participants must use a computer with a good internet connection and a working recent version or R (and ideally also RStudio). A working webcam is desirable for enhanced interactivity during the live sessions.

Failure to attend will result in the full cost of the course being charged. Tuesday 24th

Classes from 09:00 – 13:00

● Introduction to R and RStudio: getting comfortable with the interface, script files,
help files, objects, and error messages
● R packages: why they are useful, how to install and load packages
● Tidyverse: differences in R coding approaches, why use tidyverse over base R?
● R projects
● Loading and tidying data: creating an analysis dataset using select, filter and mutate
functions

Wednesday 25th

Classes from 09:00 – 13:00

● Functional coding: how to automate code and reduce repetition
● Manipulating data: how to combine and transform data into a different format
● Creating customisable summary tables that can be easily exported
● Principles of data visualisation and an introduction to ggplot2

 

Thursday 26th

Classes from 09:00 – 13:00

● Customising plots using scale and theme functions in ggplot
● Showing multiple graphs on a single visualisation using faceting
● Saving and exporting visualisations
● Producing professional reports using RMarkdown

Dr. Sophie Lee
Dr. Sophie Lee

Sophie is a seasoned statistician and statistical trainer, with over a decade of experience in
teaching statistics. She is passionate about making statistical training accessible and
engaging to individuals of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels.

Sophie’s research interests lie in spatial data analysis and planetary health. She has a PhD in
spatio-temporal epidemiology from LSHTM and is a Fellow of the Higher Education
Academy.
